Hippotherapy, when interpreted from the Greek language, literally means therapy with the help of a horse. Hippotherapy is therapy performed by a licensed therapist using the horse’s movement as a treatment tool. A Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist or Speech-Language Pathologist may uses hippotherapy as a treatment technique after they have received further education/training in hippotherapy.
Hippotherapy offers the potential for improvement in the following areas:
- Arousal, motivation and attention
- Balance and posture
- Belief in one’s functional capabilities
- Bilateral integration and body awareness
- Endurance
- Expressive/receptive speech and language
- Improved range of motion
- Modification of muscle tone
- Neuromotor function
- Timing/coordination of motor strategies
- Oral-motor functioning
Clients and/or client families who are interested in receiving hippotherapy are given a Parent Handbook to help guide them through the steps necessary to receive services. Therapy sessions are initiated after necessary paperwork, including a physician referral, is completed. The client is then evaluated (all evaluations require a minimum of 1 hour) and treatment is performed based on evaluation results and recommendations.
